The Slay Ballers 2.0 – FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 – South Korea vs Germany Match Preview

The mental calculations that precede the final group stage matches of every tournament can be very gripping and exciting, and Group H is set to be an example in this regard. Germany, Morocco, Colombia, and South Korea all have a chance to qualify for the knockout stages, and both matches will surely prove to be as interesting as ever. With South Korea picking up zero points so far, the jury will be on them to see how they fare against second-place holders Germany after disappointing performances in their first matches. South Korea will surely need to bring on their A-game to get something out of this promising match.

South Korea will be expecting a miracle and beat Germany to win their first match in six games in the World Cup as their last win was a thrilling encounter against Spain at the 2015 edition. They have, however, been largely unlucky in this 2023 edition. Their first match against Morocco was highly disappointing, as they conceded two easy goals to Colombia. While some aspects of their play were encouraging in the loss, many decided it was a one-off and expected a better performance against debutants Morocco. The Atlas Lionesses however sprung off the blocks as soon as the whistle sounded and were rewarded for their aggressiveness with a goal in the sixth minute. South Korea would take more than sixty percent possession yet record no shots on target and ultimately succumb to an agonizing loss to the North Africans. This is why they have it all to do against the strongest team – on paper – in the group for their last match.

Germany, on the other hand, started their campaign on a very high note, beating debutants Morocco six-nil at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, with veteran forward Alexandra Popp scoring a brace. They, however, fell to a highly unlucky defeat to Colombia in their second game, conceding a ninety-seventh-minute header after having equalized in the eighty-ninth minute through an Alex Popp penalty. This put Colombia first in Group H, placing Germany second and giving the group an “all to play for” end. While Germany and Colombia are now favourites to qualify, South Korea know that beating Germany by a wide margin could place them second, pushing them through to the knockout rounds. However, they would need Colombia to beat Morocco.

Determination and true grit are sure to play a part in who qualifies in Group H. Nevertheless, it promises to be as interesting as women can make a matter to be. After all, what men can do, women can do better.
