I would like to do a throwback to the International Day of The Girl Child.  The event themed "The Power of The Adolescent Girl" was aimed at unleashing and igniting the power of the Girl Child. Topics like female leadership; building confidence as a leader, making healthy decisions and lot more were presented by various people. 56 students were in attendance including boys. We understand the need for boys to be part of this so as to further ensure this cause.

The role of women in nation building. In the olden days, women were over looked. As a result of the patriarchal nature of the society, women were seen as inferior. Most times, they were just active in the private sphere. For the public sphere, they were not given the chance to explore their potentials because they were only seen as nurturers and home makers. The advent of globalization has served as eye opener for a lot of people on the role of women in the society. Gender activism has stressed the importance of bringing women to the fore-fronts of national development. More and more, gender equity is becoming stressed by various organizations part of which is the issue of female leadership. More women are getting involved in politics, community development, playing key roles in the helm of affairs of a nation, likewise amplifying their voices in every sector of life. However, one can observe that there is still low representation of women contributing to national development

Sometimes I think about my life, have I been swayed by winds of voices around me, have I been silenced just to receive validation from people. I have seen and experienced a lot and definitely there are still a lot to experience. Years passing by asking questions, asking questions about who really I am; asking questions about my identity. Where are the dreams I have woven carefully as a little girl, dreams which really took me time to weave.Where is that glittering hope I foresaw then, where is that life I hope to achieve as a little girl. I see them all shattering. I always prayed then for my dreams to find wings to fly. Dreams! Dreams!! Dreams!!! Dreams of making a mark in the world of politics, a mover and shaker of things in that line. As a little girl, I was really passionate about this. My inquisitive mind would think whenever I was being taught names of the presidents of the world then, ‘’Why do we have few ladies’’ There and then, I began to read, equip myself about this g

Female genital mutilation (FGM) according to World Health Organization (WHO) comprises all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. Furthermore according to this health organization, this procedure has no health benefits for girls and women. From statistics, this act is prevalent in 29 countries in Africa including Nigeria and Middle East. Why would a fellow human be made to suffer all in the name of culture, why will someone be made to go through excruciating pain all because culture has to be practiced? Everything all in the name of culture, why must women be prey for cultural excesses and barbaric acts. Most cultural acts are just being really unfair to women. Culture, can u please be enhanced or are you static. No, I would say because these cultural practices are made by men therefore can be changed but then why are these changes not forthcoming. Yes, we have been seei

WOMEN IN LEADING POSITIONS My name is Kimberly. I love leadership and this has been my flare right from childhood. I was really an exceptional child. I excelled well in anything I do, I have always been active in politics. I read news all over the world and how politics has evolved over the time. I argue about politics with my male friends and sometimes most people marveled at this because I was a female which wasn’t really peculiar t0 my gender. I have been assigned with leadership roles at different points while growing up and couple of times I have been awarded best leader of the year. I was just in for politics and I am not just the everyday lady one sees on the street, I had the strong will in me and I was quite aggressive with my opinions.   The quest continued even as I got admitted into the university. I was the class rep of my class from part 1 to part 4 and my leadership skill was well appreciated by my colleagues and even lecturers. Number of times, I had fought for
